Job Profiles in IB

Intelligence Bureau (IB)
India's Central Intelligence Bureau (IB) is reputed to be the oldest intelligence agency in the world. In the past it was tasked with all intelligence targeting but in recent times it has focused on internal security. The IB is officially under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), but in practice the Director IB (DIB) is a member of the Joint Intelligenc

e Committee (JIC) and Steering Committee and has the authority to brief the Prime Minister should the need arise, but intelligence inputs (at least in theory) go through the regular channels in the MHA to the JIC.

The collection mechanisms of the IB vary depending on the region, but the IB operates both at the state level and the national level. The bulk of the intelligence collection is carried out by `Grade II' employees of the IB, i.e. in increasing order of seniority; the Security Assistants (Constable), the Junior Intelligence Officers (Head Constable), the Asst. (Central) Intelligence Officer (Sub-Inspector), Deputy Central Intelligence Officers (Inspector), and Joint Central Intelligence Officers (Superintendent of Police). The `Class I'(gazette) officers carry out coordination and higher-level management the IB. These officers are (again in increasing order of seniority) Asst. Director, the Deputy Director, Joint Director, Addl. Director, Special Director or Special Secretary and finally the Director IB. Grade II officers are in part direct recruitment and officer deputed from state police forces, but Class I officers are mostly deputed from state services.

At the state level all IB officers are part of the State Special Bureau report to a Central Intelligence Officer (the intelligence advisor to the Governor). The IB maintains a large number of field units and headquarters (which are under the control of Joint or Deputy Directors). It is through these offices and the intricate process of deputation that a very `organic' linkage between the state police agencies and the IB is maintained. In addition to these at the national level the IB has several units (in some cases Subsidiary Intelligence Bureaus) to keep track of issues like terrorism, counter-intelligence, VIP security and threat assessment, and sensitive areas (i.e. J&K, North East Region (NER) etc...).

PEON'S DAUGHTER MAKES IT TO IAS....

PEON'S DAUGHTER MAKES IT TO IAS....

Sandeep Kaur IAS
Rank 138

Sheer hard work and inspiration from an old TV serial have helped Sandeep Kaur, a peon's daughter, crack the tough civil services exam. And, as she says, she couldn't have done it without the rock solid support of her extended family.

Sandeep, 29, daughter of Ranjit Singh, a peon in the revenue department here, has given Punjab reasons to feel proud by attaining the 138rd rank in the open merit list of the All India Civil Services Examination.

"I am proud to be a peon's daughter and I want my father to complete his service with full dignity. I owe my success to my parents and god. Despite meager resources, my father provided the best facilities to me," Sandeep told

"I was very motivated after seeing the serial 'Udaan', the tale of a lower middle class girl who became an Indian Police Service officer."
Morinda town is around 35 km from state capitalChandigarh.
While recounting her difficult days, Sandeep, a civil engineer, said,

"After completing my engineering, I first wanted to do a job to become economically independent before starting preparations for IAS. But for two continuous years, I did not find any job, as there were very few opportunities for girls in the civil engineering sector.
"There was nobody to guide me and we did not have enough money to pay the hefty fees of coaching classes. Therefore, I made the first two attempts (2005 and 2006) without taking any formal coaching," she pointed out.
Thereafter, her father took a bank loan to fund the cost of coaching institutes.

She took coaching at Chandigarh, Patiala and New Delhi.
Despite her engineering background, she meticulously chose the subjects of sociology and Punjabi literature. In 2007, she missed the main exam by a whisker. She got 933 marks whereas the cut-off was 936.

"My extended family also supported me during the preparations. Every day at 4 am my cousin went to Kharar town to bring a copy of Hindu newspaper as we did not get it here.

"I have given preference to the Punjab cadre. I would certainly work against female foeticide and for the uplift of girls in the state," said Sandeep.
Since the declaration of results last week, Sandeep's house has been abuzz with mediapersons. Her family members are upbeat.
"We are from a small town of Punjab with very few resources but still my daughter has successfully cleared one of the most difficult exams of the country. The whole town is proud of her and I cannot express my feelings in words," a ;proud Amarjit Kaur, Sandeep's mother, told

"I wanted her to become an IAS officer since she was in Class 8 . But her strong determination helped her sail all the way," she said.
Gurpreet Singh, Sandeep's brother who is studying law, told IANS, "This time Sandeep was desperate to clear the exam as last time she had missed it by just three marks. During the prelimsshe studied for 18 hours and for the mains she increased it to over 20 hours. She had actually forgotten to sleep in pursuit of her dream. But my sister is still the same person. Reporters of many channels are coming to our house to interview her but she is very shy and afraid of facing the camera."
Gurpreet now wants to crack the exam himself."I will also start preparing for this exam under my sister's guidance."

IAS/IPS

A career in civil service has always the captured the imaginations of the Indian public over the many decades. It would be suffice to say that the interest has not waned even in today’s times when we take into account the number of people who take up the exams each year. In the last two years alone more than 4 lakh students have appeared for each of the civil service exams. The exams are highly competitive and require a lot of hard work and dedication to successfully clear them. A career in the Civil Service offers a wide range of career opportunities. This includes policing, collection of taxes, administration, maintenance of law and order, foreign policy etc. Rather than the monetary aspect a career in the IAS or IPS is greeted with a lot of prestige and admiration from all segments of society.
Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) of India is the autonomous body that conducts examinations for various government sector jobs in India and the most notable among these are the posts of IAS and the IPS. Many students grow up dreaming of becoming an IAS or IPS officer and are willing to work hard towards that goal, but the competition being what it is, here is a whole section dedicated towards that effort of yours.

IAS- IAS or the Indian Administrative Service is a prestigious and challenging career prospect for all those who vie to get through after cracking the exams. Only about 150 students get to join IAS cadres in India every year while lakhs of students appear for it on a yearly basis. All this despite the private sector offering better pays and perks for people working in it. One of the key attributes of the IAS is that it offers its aspirants to serve society by enhancing the lives of people. They introduce various policies and developmental projects that promote better standards of living and awareness about the people. Many IAS officers work in rural interiors of India that often lies neglected when compared to the more cosmopolitan cities of the country. It provides a lot of respectability and draws a positive influence in society. The exam consists of three phases. The first phase is the preliminary exam that consists of two objective papers for 400 marks. Following that is the Main Exam which would be held a few months later. The students are then shortlisted based on their performance in the two exams after which they go through the third phase of interview from where only 150 students would make the cut each year. Students of all streams after graduation can appear in the exam to become an IAS officer.

IPS- The IPS or the Indian Police Service is another popular career option that is fast catching up with the youth of today. A career in IPS revolves around maintaining the Law and Order situation of the country. It is particularly challenging job considering the huge population and the vast size of the country. An IPS is a very influential post and there are many who opt for IPS despite holding a high rank in the exam conducted by UPSC. As the name suggests, a person who becomes an IPS, starts with the rank of a Superintendent of Police which is a high ranking post in the police force. Both IAS and IPS are part of the joint exam stream conducted by the UPSC. With a similar selection procedure the applicants go through the same screening process. The higher ranked students usually become IAS while the lower rank students opt to join the IPS. However of late many top ranked students have been keen to join the IPS which has become a very important and crucial aspect of the administrative setup. With country often under the clutch of terror threats its important for dedicated minds to rise up to the challenges.
