IAS FAQs


Question 1:        What is Civil Service Examination?  
Answer :           Civil Service Examination (CSE) for recruitment to the All India Services and posts such as Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and 22 other central services Group A & Group B such as, Indian Revenue Service (Customs and Central Excise), Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Indian Postal Service, Indian Railway Traffic Service, Indian Railway Personnel Service, etc., will be held by Union Public Service Commission in accordance with the Rules Published by the department of personnel & Training (Government of India).
 
 
Question 2:       What is the Plan of Civil Service Examination?
Answer:            Civil Service Examination comprises two successive stages:
        (1) Civil service (Preliminary) Examinations (Objective Type) for the selection of candidates towards Main Examination.
         (2) Civil Service (Main) Examinations (Written and Interview) for the selection of candidates for the various services and post as mention in the above Question No (1).
 
 
Question 3:       How to apply for Civil Service Examination?  
Answer:    Candidates are  required to apply online by using the website http://www.upsconline.nic.in Detailed instructions for filling up online applications are available on the above-mentioned website.
 
 
Question 4:       what is the eligibility criteria for Civil Service Examination?
Answer:                      1) The candidate must hold a degree of any of universities incorporated by an Act of the central or state legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University Under Section-3 of the University Grants commission Act, 1956 or possess an equivalent qualification.
2) Candidates possessing professional and technical qualifications which are recognized by Government as equivalent to professional and technical degree would also be eligible for admission to the examination.
3) Candidates who have passed the final professional M.B.B.S. or any other Medical Examination but have not completed their internship by the time of submission of their applications for the civil services (Main) examination, will be provisionally admitted to the Examination.
4)Candidates who have appeared at an examination the passing of which would render them educationally qualified for the commission’s examination but have not been informed of the results as also the candidates who intend for appear at such a qualifying examination will also be eligible for admission to the Preliminary Examination.
5) All candidates who are declared qualified by the commission for taking the Civil Services (Main) Examination will be required to produce proof of passing the requisite examination with their application for the Main Examination failing which such candidates will not be admitted to the Main Examination.
 
 
Question 5:    Is there any restriction Number of attempts for appearing in Civil Service        Examination?  
Answer:                      1) Every candidate appearing at the examination who is otherwise eligible, shall be permitted four attempts at the examination.
                                    2) For scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes the number of attempts will not apply.
                            3) For Other Backward Classes, number of attempts shall be seven.
 
 
Question 6:     Is there any age restriction for appearing in Civil Service Examination?
Answer:             (a) A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years on 1st August, 2012, i.e. he/she must have been born not earlier than 2nd  August, 1982 and not later than 1st August, 1991.
   (b) The upper age limit prescribed above will be relaxable :
      (i) upto a maximum of five years if a candidate belongs to a Scheduled Caste or a Scheduled Tribe.
     (ii) upto a maximum of three years in the case of candidates belonging to Other Backward Classes who are eligible to avail of reservation applicable to such candidates.
     (iii) upto a maximum of five years if a candidate had ordinarily been domiciled in the  State of Jammu & Kashmir during the period from the 1st January, 1980 to the 31st day of December, 1989.
    (iv) upto a maximum of three years in the case of Defence Services personnel disabled in operations during hostilities with any foreign country or in a disturbed area and released as a consequence thereof.
   (v) upto a maximum of five years in the case of ex-servicemen including Commissioned Officers and ECOs/SSCOs who have rendered at least five years Military Service as on 1st August, 2012 and have been released
(i) on completion of assignment (including those whose  assignment is due to be completed within one year from 1st August, 2012) otherwise than by way of dismissal or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency, or
(ii) on account of physical disability attributable to Military Service, or
(iii) on invalidment.
(vi) Upto a maximum of five years in the  case of ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of five years  Military Service as on 1st August, 2012 and whose assignment has been extended beyond five years and in whose case the Ministry of Defence issues a certificate that they can apply for civil employment and that they will be released on three months notice on selection from the date of receipt of offer of appointment.
(v) upto a maximum of 10 years in the case of blind, deaf-mute and orthopaedically handicapped persons.  
  
Question 7:     When is the date and time for making application towards Civil Service           Examination? 
Answer:                      Notification will be issued by Union Public Service Commission in the first Week of February every year for Civil Service Preliminary Examination to be contacted on the 3rdweek of May Every Year.
